New Sound Technology for Film.

Traditionally, film sound has been presented in mono, stereo, or surround, where the audio is confined to a set number of channels. Now, technology has advanced to allow us to experience sound in 360 degrees, bringing it closer to how we perceive sound in reality.

This format is known as ambisonic, spatial audio, 360 sound, or 3D sound – but here, we have chosen to use the term "kringlyd" (circular sound). This is a completely new technology that primarily enables the production of recording sound and will eventually offer a cost-effective production workflow.

New software can facilitate the automation of both sound data and metadata throughout the entire production chain, from recording to post-production.

Over the past two years, Herstory has built a significant innovation project investigating the artistic development of film language related to immersive sound and production methods.

We are exploring how new sound technology can be used to enhance  the artistic content of film.

How can films produced with kringlyd affect the audience and their emotional responses?

Together with other artist, we have conducted several tests in recent years.

With support from the Regional Research Fund (RFF), we are continuing the innovation project with new tests and measurements through 2024. The goal is to obtain valuable data on how we can measure emotions through questionnaires or physiological measurements (pupil size, changes in heart rate, gaze position, etc.)

What does it feel like to stand in the middle of the music?

Through four short films, music is presented in a truly unique 360° experience, where sound and image merge to draw audiences into a rich sensory universe.

Experience the extraordinary musicians Marja Mortensson, Olav Mjelva, Åsbjørg Ryeng, and Petra Bjørhaug in spectacular performances on their instruments—created specifically for the Planetarium at the Trondheim Science Center during the 2025 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. The sounds of the Hardanger fiddle, bandoneon, joik, and a powerful church organ are brought to life in a space where you are placed at the very heart of the experience.
